Rural India, a bright spot which cannot light up the whole economy
The RBI Governor in his August policy address noted "The robust outlook for agriculture and rural demand would continue to support private consumption". Rural India has been cited as the economy's silver lining since the onset of the pandemic, often due to agriculture, its robust output and exemption from policy restrictions. Government direct support schemes like MGNREGA and PM-KISAN are also targeted towards agri. In our note last year on the rural economy (link), we had detailed its structure, high share of non-agri households, dependence on wage income even by agri households and the need to avoid equating agriculture with rural.

Chinese census results point to socioeconomic challenges that will impact the world
The Olympics has always been the worlds major sporting event and history is witness that there have been many eye-openers incidents for nations to ponder on; Tokyo Olympics is not much different. For ages, China has been a closed society and nothing much was known about the internal issues and dynamics of the society. Things are changing with the advent of technology and issues related to Chinese society are coming to the front. Chinese decline in population and the insecurity associated with it is one of the issues that have raised the alarm bells in Beijing. The backlash that has come after a Chinese adopted athlete (MacNeil) has won the gold medal for Canada has worsened the situation for CCP as it is seen as a direct impact of Chinas One-Child Policy. Society is experiencing an inverted population Pyramid which fewer young supporting a bulky older population. with the Gold going to Canada in butterfly swimming style experts are discussing whether the butterfly of progress has already flown away from China.

UK-UAE bonhomie (Opinion)
The withdrawal of the US forces from Afghanistan before the deadline has dealt a severe blow to the special relationship between the US and UK and also the EU member states. They insist that the withdrawal before time was a hasty decision and their view was not taken on-board. They also base their criticism of US President Joe Bidens decision on the inputs by both the British and other countries intelligence that such an action might end up in chaos, and the subsequent events leading to the rout by the Taliban forces in Afghanistan, proved their point.

A week ahead to decide 'fate' of Peace and Guns in Nagaland (Opinion)
It is going to be a crucial week for Nagaland. A former top level Intelligence Bureau sleuth, A.K. Mishra, has landed in Dimapur. He has not been named as peace interlocutor for Naga talks officially but for all practical purposes, he is the one. At least, he would be the go-between kind of person.

Friday, markets have shown their vulnerability, more likely to follow
Markets continued their rise and did so in style, gaining sharply on two of the five trading days and losing on two days with one being sideways. All good things must come to an end, even if it is temporary. The same happened on Friday and was a wake-up alarm for investors as well.

Limits to power: Taliban in Kabul, jailbreak in Israel (Comment)
What could possibly be common between the Taliban brandishing their weapons in Kabul and Palestinians twirling their spoons (yes, teaspoons) with a flourish? Well, the latter were celebrating because six Palestinian prisoners had pulled off a seemingly impossible escape from the high security Gilboa prison in Northern Israel. Clearly an embarrassment for a state which flaunts national security as a marketable commodity. The spoon has become an emblem because the six used it as an implement to dig a hole in the toilet attached to their cell.

Music sells again but it is not the same (Column: B-Town)
Indian music is selling again and it is earning in crores. Seems like you don't need a full album anymore, a single number suffices to make millions. Despite huge numbers in sales, a filmgoer may not identify these songs with any film! Simply because, these songs which are raking in crores, are not film songs and not likely to fit into any film situation either.

Learning from an 'asymmetric' war (Column Spy's Eye)
Evacuation of the last American soldiers from Kabul in what was a messy situation to say the least -- created by a combination of flawed assessment, inconsistency of policy and a wrong belief that the more resourceful side would win a non-traditional war -- calls for a reevaluation of the entire course of developments in Afghanistan during the two decades of the 'war on terror', a conflict that seemed to have gone on there 'forever'.

Our media has been pegging away, at a nagging length, on the 'terrorists' in the Taliban cabinet and who are controlled by Pakistan. The information available to us would have been so much more reliable had our embassy not shut entirely. Our ambassador had to leave early because in the Taliban versus US-Ghani conflict we clearly sided with the losing side.

The present Indian team seems to have a spunk that one has never seen before. One would still not place it as an extraordinary unit in comparison to the teams of the past. However, the current Indian team players have shown that they have resilience, aptitude and a will to conquer. They seem to rise out of difficulties when submerged and they do give the impression of being warriors who never say die.

Tajikistan 1st frontline state to fight Taliban2.0 in Af
New Delhi, Sep 9: The Taliban on Tuesday announced its 'government'. Though some are calling it an interim government going by the Taliban's periodical pronouncements, we have, as yet, no clue if this is actually an interim one. In any case the Taliban government is, mildly speaking, an interesting one. Many of the ministers, such as Sirajuddin Haqanni, who will be the Home Minister, are sanctioned terrorists.

Taliban victory puts Pakistan in a quandary
The Pakistan government at the moment seems to be in a quandary. The manner in which it wanted to exploit the Taliban victory in Afghanistan has rebounded threatening to reinforce religious fundamentalists inclinations in Pakistan itself. US President Joe Bidens decision to withdraw American forces from Afghanistan was due to the realisation that religious fundamentalism might not remain contained to Afghanistan.
