Gurugram, Oct 20 (IANS) The Gurugram police on Tuesday arrested dreaded criminal Sombir who was on the run after shooting at and injuring an Inspector of the Haryana Police in the city's Palam Vihar area in September, police said.

The accused was overpowered and arrested from Dharam Colony in Gurugram after a brief shootout during which the criminal fired at police in a bid to escape. A countrymade pistol, two cartridges and a motorcycle were seized from him.

"Sombir alias Chand alias David alias Govind of Jind district was riding the motorcycle when he was intercepted by police on Kartarpuri Road. Police signalled him to stop but he fired and tried to flee but was overpowered. No one was hurt," ACP (crime) Preet Pal Sangwan said.

"The accused will be taken on police remand for questioning. Further probe is on," he added.

The ACP said that the accused was involved in half a dozen cases of murder and under the Arms Act, attempt to murder and theft registered against him in Gurugram, Sonipat, Jind, and Bhiwani districts.

Police said Inspector Sonu Malik, posted in the Commando Wing at Karnal, was shot in the right shoulder by unidentified assailants on September 6 when he along with a relative came out of a property dealer's office in Palam Vihar locality.

"When he stepped outside, three unidentified car-borne assailants shot at him. Sonu also returned the fire but the culprits escaped unhurt and sped away in their car," the police had said.

An FIR was registered against an unknown culprits at Palam Vihar police station.

Initial investigations revealed that an old rivalry led to the attack on Malik. Sources claimed that the attackers had conducted a recce on his movements before committing the crime.
